The Royal Military College of Canada is the military academy of the Canadian forces and it is the only federal institution in Canada with power to grant degrees.
It is over one hundred years old and began its life in 1874 near an act of the Canadian Parliament to provide a complete education in all branches of military tactics, fortification, engineering, and general mathematical knowledge in subjects connected with and needful to thorough knowledge of the military.
The Royal Military College of Canada is located on Point Frederick; it is a forty one hectare peninsular in Kingston, Ontario. The college is partly older historic buildings with latest academic, athletic and dormitory facilities.
Officer Cadets are trained in the four pillars of academics, military, atheletics and bilingualism, these are French and English.
On June 1, 1876, the Military College of Canada opened its doors to the first class of eighteen gentlemen cadets. These are the “Old Eighteen,” known by name to all cadets today. Two years later, in 1878, Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, granted the College the right to use the prefix “Royal.”
“The Royal Military College of Canada Degrees Act, 1959,” passed by the 25th Ontario Legislature and given Royal Assent on March 26, 1959, empowers the College to award degrees in Arts, Science, and Engineering. RMC now offers a wide variety of programmes in these three areas, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels offered both on site through traditional studies and by distance learning through the Division of Continuing Studies.
The RMC mission is to educate, train and develop Officer Cadets for leadership careers in the Canadian Forces.
The education is free for most students and a monthly salary is paid which meets incidentals. You can take the courses on site or by distance learning in both official languages of English and French.
For access to The Royal Military College of Canada an individual must be a Canadian citizen, or authorized by the Canadian government; and possess the necessary academic qualifications for the academic program that the individual is applying for they must also meet one of the following conditions:
They must be an MOC qualified fellow of the Canadian Forces containing members of the Reserve Forces. Non qualified members may apply with the recommendation of their detachment or formation Commander; or be an applicant for the Regular Officer Training Plan or the Reserve Entry Training Plan or be an employee of the Department of National Defence or a spouse of a member of the CF. Individuals who have no affiliation with DND and who have successfully completed their high school studies or meet the general conditions for admission as mature students may also apply for admission through the Division of Continuing Studies, and may be accepted into an undergraduate programme of study at RMC on an exceptional basis and provided there is space available in the programme of their choice.
