The Champs Chomp again!

So the Florida Gators are National Champs again. This is a rare feat and is something to be celebrated in a time when dollar signs ring louder than school bells. The core of Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, Al Horford, and Taureen Green all came back for their junior years of college. Many had Noah projected in the top 3 of last year’s draft but instead he came back with his teammates to repeat as national champs.

This Florida Gators team is the first team to return it’s starting five and win back-to-back titles since the Wooden lead Bruins days. It is unlikely that the four will return and in fact there is much talk about all four going into the NBA Draft this summer. There will never be a dynasty in the sense that the UCLA Bruins created but this Florida foursome have left an indeligible legacy on the landscape of College Basketball.

College sports is a major part of a universities image, sometimes even overshadowning their academics. For this reason, you see many major universities throwing millions of dollars at top flight coaches to take their school to the promised land. Florida University if sitting on cloud 9 these days as it is the first school in the history of the NCAA to hold both the Football and Basketball National Championship Plaques in the same school year.

Congratulations to those players and I truly respect the fact that they all could committ to coming back for the sole purpose of winning the title again. Many young scholar-athletes can learn a thing or two from this foursome. Remeber scholar is the first word in scholar-athlete.
